Deobra Redden, the 30-year-old assailant who gained notoriety last week for boldly attacking a judge during a sentencing hearing, now faces a sentence of 19 to 48 months in prison for the initial felony battery charge. This development coincides with Redden’s new felony counts related to the shocking assault on Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus.
Sporting shackles, a mask, and mitts during Monday’s appearance, Redden received the prison sentence for a baseball bat attack carried out last year, resulting in up to four years behind bars.
Despite last week’s claim of moving beyond his violent past during the attempted battery charge hearing, Judge Holthus remained unconvinced. Her decision to sentence him to prison further fueled Redden’s rage, leading to the dramatic attack on the judge.
The courtroom incident on January 3 saw Redden leap over the stand and tackle Judge Holthus before being restrained by a clerk and multiple officers. Post-attack, Redden was sent back to jail on a $54,000 bail, facing charges of extortion, coercion with force, and battery on a protected person. Notably, he had been previously released while awaiting his initial sentencing.
While Holthus swiftly returned to work despite minor injuries, one officer involved in the altercation suffered a dislocated shoulder and head injury, requiring hospitalization. The sentencing carries significant legal consequences for Redden, altering not only his immediate fate but also prompting questions about courtroom safety and security measures. The legal community now anticipates further proceedings as Redden faces additional felony charges stemming from the shocking assault on Judge Holthus.
Reflecting on the incident, CSHS student Landy Joseph remarked, “I thought the whole situation was crazy, but I have to admit it was a little funny.”
