(REVIEW) Beetlejuice Returns to the Big Screen

After 36 years of one of the most memorable movies to watch vanished, it finally appears again with a sequel!

Beetlejuice 2 was released on September 6, 2024. The movie appears in front of the fans wondering why now and not the years before.

Even though Beetlejuice 2 was a sequel that had been in discussion for over three decades, the film director Tim Burton stated that he did not make the sequel just for money, he did the sequel to reenergize himself to get back to doing the things he loves. He wanted to create a sequel also to have returning stars as well as newcomers like the popular actor from one of his best creations Jenna Ortega from the hit TV series “Wednesday”, and Winona Ryder from Stranger Things.

When Beetlejuice 2 opened with $110M domestically it out-grossed the first film’s entire global total!

WHAT IS BEETLEJUICE 2 ABOUT?

Beetlejuice 2 is a spinoff that the old fans come to love from the old 1988 film Beetlejuice.

After the unnoticeable devastation to the family, all the Deetz family members could reunite. While still haunted by the terrifying Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life flips when her defiant daughter, Astrid, discovers an odd model in town and a secret portal to the afterlife. With trouble happening in both realms, it is only a matter of time before the unstoppable Beetlejuice returns by saying his name three times to finish what he started.

It is all right for newcomers to watch Beetlejuice 2 because you will be able to understand it. Even if you do not understand the characters in the movie, you can always watch the original film to understand their behaviors and their reasonings on certain things.

REVIEW

I think the sequel could have some improvements based on Beetlejuice 2. Some of the improvements they should have made were to the plot, which was a bit narrow and confusing; adding more charming/memorable moments from the movie; and the lack of connection between the characters.

“I like it a little more than the first Beetlejuice, but as the plot thickened, I became less interested in it. I feel like it is overly reliant on nostalgia and its imaginative vibe.” 10th Grader Nick Medina.

While some Beetlejuice fans dislike some new designs, they made in Beetlejuice 2, most fans enjoyed the movie from the creativity of each scene, visual effects, the newcomers/actors on the set, and having a new perspective of the loving demon they all know to love.

Fans were also amazed by the costumes the actors wore. They can thank Colleen Atwood, the costume designer, for creating the iconic whimsical goth look with black and white stripes.

“The costumes were kind of good with a nostalgic vibe to it, especially the humor and the new story that Beetlejuice will be in.” says 10th Grader Alejandro Reyes.

Overall, Beetlejuice’s sequel had fans surprised after being able to watch their favorite actor, Michael Keaton, play his role in the iconic Beetlejuice after 36 long years.

“The original Beetlejuice was so much fun and exciting visually. The sequel is all that but beautiful and interestingly emotional here and there,” says Micheal Keaton, who plays the titular character.

As for the fans along with Beetlejuice 2, they loved the newcomers more than the original comers because of their favorite actors’ roles they will be playing as. With the amazing movie the fans reunited with they hope to see Beetlejuice 3 as it has yet not been confirmed by Tim Burton the director.
