Minority Spotlight

Minority Spotlight

On November 22, 2024, National Honors Society (NHS) hosted an event called “Minority spotlight” for all sophomores to attend. It was held in the auditorium.

NHS stated “The minority spotlight event was developed to give visibility to students from diverse cultures, places, countries, highlighting the challenges faced by immigrants and minorities. Our goal is to share stories of resilience, showcasing how they have overcome difficult moments to become successful scholars, leaders, and achieve excellent GPAs.”

There were a total of 6 countries that were represented. Those countries are the following: Brazil, Colombia, Haiti, Jamaica, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

When asked what she learned from this seminar, attendee Christi Alanso said “From the minority Spotlight event I learned that for students who are from a third world country, it is harder for them when they get here. The language barrier and the fact that they don’t have as much- opportunities as us, not only when they get here but when they’re in they’re own country is so drastic. I learned that being able to take those opportunities is so vital because we are offered everything and we just don’t use it. I’ve definitely reflected on that throughout the whole seminar. I think it was a really big inspiration because it shows that all those honors students are immigrants and if they’re able to do it then so are we”
