Oscar nominations have officially come out. This top year’s nominees include Barbie, Poor Things, Killers of The Flower Moon, Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, Oppenheimer and more were nominated for many awards including Best Picture.
As these nominations were released, a few things couldn’t go unnoticed. Going through the Barbie nominees, people immediately pointed out how Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig weren’t nominated for Best Actress and Best Director.
Robbie has been previously nominated for films like I, Tonya and Bombshell. Gerwig’s name has also been spread for her films, Lady Bird and Little Women. The media went through an uproar after the news was released in defense of the actress and director.
Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in the film and was nominated for best supporting actor, spoke out in support of his costar and director “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius, to say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement. Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture, and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees”
America Ferrera also expressed her thoughts on the Oscar list “Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. Creating this world and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list”
I do think it’s unfair how other directors like Nolan or Scorcese were easily chosen for best directors and had their movies nominated but Greta didn’t. It’s hard to see a director not get acknowledged but have their movie get nominated for best film. Especially a movie that made such a cultural impact.
Though, as disappointing as this is, it wouldn’t be considered a snub since the movie received eight nominations. It’s also important to acknowledge all the women who received success this year like Lily Gladstone who received a Best Actress nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon. Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall received a nomination for best directing and best picture.
Margot Robbie expressed how even though she wishes Greta was nominated, she’s still thrilled that people who worked on the movie were acknowledged “We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this,”
I think it’s important to acknowledge that even though Gerwig and Robbie weren’t nominated, there are still talented people who were acknowledged for their work. There are many talented women who were nominated for big awards this year that continue to pave the way for more people. The Oscars is scheduled to premiere on March 10th, 2024.
