Kicking Off into a New Season

With the new school year starting up, comes the football season. Last year, the Coral Springs Colts football team’s record was 5-5. With a mildly difficult schedule, versing teams like Monarch, Piper, and Blanche Ely, the 5-5 record was very impressive. The team barely missed the playoffs due to their district loss to Stoneman Douglas on September 29. This was all last year, so we should be doing just as good this year as we have an easier schedule, right? Well, a lot has changed throughout the off-season.

Almost every single player on the 2023 Colt’s varsity football has transferred or graduated to other schools. Team leaders in scoring, passing, and rushing such as Jamarien Edgerton, Opious Knox, and many more all left for various schools that are known for their football. I was unable to ask the last few players of last year’s varsity team, as they did not want to comment on it.

Along with the players leaving, it would not be a Coral Springs High School football team without the head coach leaving too! Eddie Brown, the former head coach of the CSHS football team recently stepped down on July 20, to become the Athletic Director for Miami Central High School.

So much can change in a brief time frame. So, who is the new head coach for the Colts? Anthony Wallace, a former coach for McArthur High School in 2020 and has spent the last 3 years at Pompano High School, is the official head coach of the Coral Spring Colts. “The support staff at the school, players, and other coaches have been all in and buying in with the hopes and aspirations that we bring to this program” Wallace said in his latest interview.

We know Coach Wallace is excited for the upcoming season, but what about the players? As the team goes into week 2 of their season after a deflating loss to Palm Beach Lakes last week Friday, on the 27th, losing 13 to 41, the players expressed themselves. The crushing defeat was at home, with little practice as the team was behind schedule. “I feel disappointed, but this week, we will bounce back.” says the junior Ivan Becker, the starting center for the Colt’s offensive line.

Ivan has taken the role of the team captain seriously and gives his all off and on the field. Ivan is number 52 on the field, so cheer him on when you see him!

Sophomore Tyson Vixamar, number 11 had a lot to say, “I feel like we were supposed to win that game, but I’m disappointed about what happened. People were not ready to play… And for next week, we are going to make sure we win and work on our assignments…” Tyson is most definitely a fan favorite as he had a great game last week Friday.

You could call me biased as I am on the team, but the future is looking great for our school’s football program. All we need to do right now is build the foundations. Sharaf Amireh stated as I was typing this out. Sharaf is a sophomore with the number 30.

As we go into the season with fresh players and coaching staff, new foundations need to be built for the future of this school’s football program. At the end of the day, no matter how this year’s football season goes, the Coral Springs Football team is starting from the ground up and in a matter of time, with support and hard work, will be a force to reckon with within the district.
