59th Super Bowl

59th Super Bowl

The Super Bowl LIX was a Super Bowl not to miss. With the internet-famous halftime show, the Chiefs lost after two years of winning. This would be the Eagles’ second time winning and dismissing the Chief’s chance of getting a historic three-year winning streak.

Just two years ago, the Chiefs and Eagles went up against each other and the Chiefs won with a 38-35. This year would have been the revenge for the Eagles. Here is all you need to know about Super Bowl LIX and the halftime show.

Halftime Show

All Super Bowls have a halftime show, this started in 1967 when a marching band performed from the University of Arizona and Grambling State University.

Now, many artists, such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Usher, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, and even Prince have performed at the halftime show. This year, Kendrick Lamar performed, and he definitely made an impact.

The Halftime show theme was “The Great American Game” and included many people in the act, such as SZA, Samuel L. Jackson, Serena Williams, and Mustard.  Many elements and surprises were put into the show to symbolize something.

For instance, the colors were red, white, and blue to represent the American flag, Samuel L Jackson was shown dressed as Uncle Sam, and The Stage was built like buttons of a PlayStation controller. This theme references the game being played on the field and the “games” that America plays with the people.

Both SZA and Serena Williams both had previous relationships with Drake. Serena Williams is also a Compton native, so he is paying respect to his hometown and taking a shot at Drake.

Uncle Sam, performed by Samuel L. Jackson, was meant to be a stereotypical performer and is supposed to contrast Kendrick Lamar.

During the show Kendrick Lamar is shown standing in between the flag, this shows a country divided because of the ongoing racial and political tension.

Some thought Lamar’s chain, which showcased the letter “A”, represented the famous “A-minor” line in “Not Like Us”, which won 5 Grammy’s at the 2025 Grammy Awards. However, this was also debunked, since the a is similar to the company logo, pgLang. But it could mean both.

Kendrick also states, “You know they love to sue” which was a direct shot at Drake, who filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group over the song “Not Like Us.”

Finally, at the end of the Halftime show the crowd read “Game Over” which shows that the Halftime show is over. This could also be another shot at Drake telling him the beef has been officially over.

But what do some people from our school think of the Super Bowl and the Halftime show?

“Yes! It was pretty good!” States Lucas Cruz, a 9th grader after being asked what he felt about the halftime show for Super Bowl LIX. Cruz states that the Super Bowl can be boring and that he does not watch football often because “I do not know what is happening most of the time.”

Linique Dean, who is in 9th grade, does not normally watch football or any sports often and only really watches volleyball. Dean states “I find the Super Bowl itself to be extremely unentertaining but for those who enjoy watching sports, I understand why it would be quite fun to watch, as well as exciting to look forward to each year.”

Super Bowl Game

The Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts, threw for two touchdowns and rushed for a third. Kicker Jake Elliott made four field goals. Along with 221 yards passing, Jake Hurts also had 72 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes was struggling with throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble on a strip-sack, which means when a quarterback loses possession of the football in the process and fumbles the ball, he was sacked six times.

According to CBS Sports Jeff Kerr, Mahomes had more interceptions in the Super Bowl than in his other 20 playoff games combined.

How did the Super Bowl start?

The First Super Bowl was held on January 15, 1967, and was called the AFL-NFL  World Championship Game, AFL is the American Football League and the NFL is the National Football League. It was played in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles California.

This was a result of the merging of the  AFL and NFL. This agreement called for an end-of-season championship game, which was completed in 1970.

The term “Super Bowl Sunday” is the day of the Super Bowl game and has grown to be an unofficial American holiday. People watch it at home, in taverns, and even in restaurants around the country.

The Super Bowl was started or created to determine the ultimate winner by having the best teams from each league compete in a single championship game.
